7 Tips for Capturing Great Group Photos
Group photos are some of the most common types of photographs. Unfortunately, the person behind the camera doesn’t always know what he or she is doing. A number of things can go wrong with the photos if the photographer doesn’t have a lot of experience with digital cameras .
Group photos can be taken anywhere: weddings, parties, celebrations or school graduations. If you want to take some amazing pictures, here are some tips to help you take the best group photos possible:
1. Take Multiple Shots
Does your camera have a continuous shooting mode? Put it to good use! The second and third shots are usually better than the first because everyone seems a bit more relaxed. While you’re at it, mix up the framing. Take some shots that are tightly framed and take some that are at a wide focal length.
2. Take Control
Communicate with your subjects. Tell them where to stand and where to look. This will give them the feeling that they are in good hands. Taking control will increase your confidence and if you are confident, you will be able to take better pictures than you would if you were nervous. You’re supposed to be the expert, after all.
3. Consider The Location
What would be the best location for the photo? Setting is just as much a part of the picture as the group themselves. It should provide context to what the image is about. For instance, if you want to take pictures of a football team, then the best location would obviously be their field.
4. Make Sure You Use The Right Amount Of Light
The amount of light you need varies depending on the situation and the type of camera you’re using. Use flash if the group is small and you are close enough for it to have an effect. If the group is outdoors and the sun is low in the sky, make sure it’s not positioned directly behind you.
5. Prepare
Think about the camera you are going to use. Canon cameras, for example, are great for group photos. People don’t like waiting, so make sure you have everything set up ahead of time at the location. Think about how you will have them pose and have all of your equipment ready.
6. Think About How You Pose The Group
For larger groups, have the taller subjects stand in the back and on the edges. Keep the distance between the back line and front line as small as you can. If there are only two people, make them the central focal point. Have everyone raise their chins.
7. Pay Attention To The Little Details
It’s the little details that make a picture special. If you’re shooting a basketball team, be sure to include basketballs. There should be a rim in the background and they should be wearing their uniforms with tennis shoes. Without those little details, the photograph won’t be nearly as good.
